While employed at Papeer/eMagCreator I made a number of showcase e-magazines to promote the company’s eMagStudio design software.
The Gold Mine Effect Travel Diary is a showcase made for Rasmus Ankersen to promote his book, “The Gold Mine Effect“. For the book, Rasmus traveled all over the world and trained with the world’s top athletes in soccer, tennis, long distance running, golf and more to figure out why certain places on the planet seem to breed all the top performers in their fields.
To strike a chord for authenticity, Rasmus wanted the promo to provide the reader with some excerpts from each chapter, but presented in a fun and engaging way that took them along for the journey.
My approach was to make the entire thing into a worn travel diary with each page looking visibly affected by the surroundings of the location in which it was written. Starting at his office desk, each chapter takes the reader to a new country and setting. As pages flip, backgrounds and environmental shadows cast on the pages change to fit the particular setting.
Every page was made to look like it was haphazardly put together, with stains, dirt, ballpoint scribbles and sometimes even taped-in napkins. Rasmus also wanted to include photos and video excepts from his interviews with the athletes, so I integrated video clips made to look like taped-in photos, with certain pages revealing image galleries in the form of small stacks of polaroids to sift through via animation. There’s even a handy foldout travel map as a secondary means of navigation.
The actual diary was created in illustrator, while all enchancements were added using Flash and eMagStudio. The screenshots do not really convey the interactivity involved, so I suggest trying it out:
